I tried to use less of the lasso tool. But I think I went too free hand because I didn't have time to block out the rest of the image.
I have to practice using both. And I will be more committed to practicing at least a painting a day. I have to make it more of my own routine.
I don't really see huge improvements in my painting. I feel like there is no style to my paintings. They are almost boring. How can I add more of a style to the paintings? Or do you feel the same way?
Your style will develop with practice over time. And you're right it's boring and discouraging to do those drills. That's the reason why most of the people quit. From all of the students I lectured at SJSU only one survived and still doing daily paintings.
If you quit you quit and won't improve. If you keep going you will improve even if it's slow, you will improve.
I feel like you're still trying to get the drawings right. Free your mind and really focus on color and light. In this one you left out most of the highlights and shadows. The boat is casting a shadow on the water the background elements have a highlight and shadow side. You can't tackle all the weaknesses at once. So don't worry if the image looks crappy at the end. What matters it what you learn while painting it. Really think about where the light is coming from and how it influences the elements in the picture.
This is painting 18? I felt my first "slight" improvements around 30 paintings. And another in the hundreds. It takes time. Otherwise everybody will do it right? :)
Keep going and do more than one if you feel like it. The more you do the faster you will learn.
